Their popular nickname in the 1940s was "Overseas Cap", among other colorful descriptions. These were commonly worn by paratroops and other specialty soldiers during early WWII but then opened up to many US Army soldiers during the later months. They were distinctive from the standard army issue style garrison cap of the
